Home safety is a concern for everyone. Most people are aware of the need to protect their home and possessions against theft, and any unwelcome intrusion into their home by strangers, if they are absent.
It is always a good idea to be totally familiar with your neighborhood and to know of any neighborhood watch schemes conducted within the community. Further it is good also to be on friendly terms with your immediate neighbors who can keep an eye on your house in your absence, and in turn you can watch out for their home while they are away.
In addition to these simple precautions there a few tips which can be followed easily to make your home safer. –
- Take great care about who you let into your house. If a service man calls unexpectedly and asks for entry on some pretext or other, in no circumstances should you allow entry into your home. Never open your door fully to strangers and always have the door safety chain latched.
- Become familiar with the regular visitors to the neighborhood like the mailman, the garbage collectors, and the household gardeners who frequent the area. If you see strangers roaming in the area speak to a neighbor and ask if they no the person, if not call your neighborhood watch, and if anything suspicious is seen do not hesitate to call the police.
- Monitor all callers through a peephole in your door, and if you plan to go out make sure that your alarm system is set, and that all windows are securely fastened. Let your neighbor know you are going to be away for a while, and if you are going to be absent for a day or two let them know where you can be contacted.
